Grantmaking
Instructions
New grant applications are accepted twice yearly with deadlines of March 1st and October 1st.
The application and approval process follows these steps:
Grant submissions must be made through the grant application form found at the top of this page.
Upon receipt of the completed application, the Development Council reviews the completed submission and presents suitable proposals to the Trustees for approval.
Trustees determine whether or not to approve the proposal.
The Foundation informs organizations of their decision regarding the application by April 15th or November 15th.
Should the grant application be approved, funds will be distributed within 15 days of informed approval.
Selection Criteria
Grants are selected by the Brown Family Foundation trustees. The trustees seek to fund 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations that are committed to supporting efforts in at least one of the following categories. Preference will be given to organizations whose mission and work supports more than one.
Education
Racial Justice
Poverty
Climate Change
Health and Wellness
The foundation generally considers grants between $10,000-$100,000 for the duration of between one and two years. When working with new organizations, we prefer to initially award a one-year grant. Those who have been awarded by us in the past can apply for a two-year grant.
Site Visitation
Site visits are not part of the formal application and approval process. However, a member of the Brown Family Foundation may contact you in order to schedule a site visit in order to strengthen the relationship between the Foundation and our grantees.
